I can be a bit quirky, so here's a thought. There was a pro wrestling tag-team back in the 80's and 90's called The Nasty Boys. When asked by the announcer "How nasty are you?" Their response was always a lusty, "As nasty as we want to be!" So, start asking yourself by your name (in this example,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I used my name):
Decide that you want to be happy Realize you have the power to make yourself happy Be grateful and appreciative for as much as you can
imagine When people ask you, "How's it going?"
Respond with, "Great!"

When you're asked how it's going, say, "It's going great!" "I'm doing well!" Believe me, some will actually take note of those responses. But, you'll have to live up to those comments! Are you ready?

That's right,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], try something incredibly simple and not a "Secret." Try smiling more often. Start having some courage and heart. Be human,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], be pleasant, have faith. SMILE! The blinders you've had on will fall off and you will see so many more things to be happy about!

The power is there. Your mind is a creative force. Yet, it will take some time to rewrite the messages that you've given your subconscious. But you can do it - the power is there if you have the desire and intention. The only difficulty is deciding if you really want to make the effort!
Stop entering into the daily "moan and groan" sessions about the economy, the opposite sex or your home team! Walk away from that garbage. Start to expand your vision of the world. Practice being grateful and appreciative. It will change the way you think and the way you feel.
How do you "become" happy? Here are some suggestions:
Why should any of us sit around passively for something good to happen to us before we feel happy? In reality, if we do this, we are living in a spirit of lack and the universe will continue to respond in giving us exactly that! After all, "like attracts like."
Thinking "I will be happy when I get a better job,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," or "I will be happy if I find someone to be in a relationship with," is creating a mindset that you are not happy and you don't know how to make yourself happy!
That's right, no more shrugging the shoulders and grunting when asked, "How's it going?" No more automatic, cold, machine-like,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "OK" either! Being happy means taking action and getting out of the comfort zone.
My main social outlet is dancing. Recently at a Swing Dance a lady asked me why I was so happy. My answer was, "Because I want to be." That is what the Law of Attraction and being intentional has given me.

Yes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you may not have decided that happiness is for you. Perhaps you get a lot of attention/sympathy/company from those who also are not happy. Perhaps that is your "comfort zone." Being happy will mean you have to live in a new way. Being happy will mean a new focus and effort.

When you get done, pick a couple that you can imagine actually doing, and then go do them. Don't worry about getting anything done perfectly, just get moving. Don't worry about finding the perfect solution. Just get moving. Once you get moving, you will begin to gather some information about what works for you, what you seem to be better suited to do, and then find another next step you can take.
Problematically, many of us been sucked into complacency, sitting back waiting for someone else to fix the problem. Even more problematic, many of us have succumbed to a form of self-induced weakness, wherein we trade away our ability to make choices and act on them for the feel-good-by-feeling-bad mentality of blaming and complaining.
Sure, some of us followed amped up illusions of ever greener pastures and so wound up making choices that have contributed to our own demise. (How many people swallowed the illusion that they could somehow afford that house with all borrowed money on interest rates that were only going to last six months?)

Want to make a difference in your own life? How about starting by making a list of all the things you could do that would earn an extra $5 for you and your family. When you get done with that list, make one that includes things you could do to earn an extra $50. And then one on $500. And then $5,000. Go as far as you like with this idea.
Many of us have been impacted in significant ways brought on by circumstances we did not create. There's no argument here on this one.
If anyone is going to get you out of this mess,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it will most likely be you! The same holds true for me and the impacts I'm experiencing. Not the government. Not the liberal form of government. Not the conservative form of government. Not some charitable organization. Not a new employer with guaranteed business success.

That leads us to the next and perhaps even greater challenge - many of us find this kind of advice challenging because it brings responsibility (the ability to respond) right back in our face.

True enough. However,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], no matter how bleak the situation, there are still things I can do about my current circumstance. It is unlikely that any single choice I make will solve the whole problem or repair my damaged job,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], housing, savings,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or general living situation. However, without the next step, how are things going to improve? Without doing whatever I can about my circumstances, what am I supposed to do?
Please keep in mind that responsibility as I have continuously used the word in these articles, refers to the ability to respond. It is not about blame. It simply recognizes that no matter what happens to me, I have the ability to make choices about how I respond, and I'm the one who is going to have to make those choices.
Complain about how unfair this is? Go ahead, complain until you turn blue and see what changes.
Of course, you could always sit there and take pot shots at steps that some people are taking to move forward. I love the folks who have jeered the job creation efforts in the UK and Europe following the crash of heavy industry in the late 1970's and 1980's. Their principle complaints? The new jobs didn't completely make whole the lost jobs; many of the new jobs only lasted a relatively short period of time; and the like.
This kind of thinking can be quite challenging to apply, primarily because of two key elements: huge impacts by conditions outside our control and having to take responsibility for our own current situation.
As we go through this economic train wreck, many are tempted to blame someone - the banks,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Bush administration,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Clinton before him,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Reagonomics, capitalism in general and any of a hundred different people and institutions. The only problem with blame is that you can blame until the cows come home and at the end of all the blaming, you will still be faced with the problem you are experiencing.

What would happen if Lois were to share that she was going through a tough time? Lois would certainly be able to discern which friends she could count on, and potentially strengthen her bonds in these relationships.
So when her colleagues looked at her expectantly when it was her turn to share,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she had nothing encouraging or upbeat to offer. She especially hated when one of them asked: ”Any news?” Did they honestly think that Lois’s life was going to improve dramatically in a week? She wanted to scream, “No,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Mitch hasn’t found a job since you last asked. Can you get off my back?” She knew that they weren’t deliberately trying to hurt her feelings so she was ashamed of her attitude.
The motivational tapes and self-help books she sometimes consulted urged her to be grateful for the aspects of her life that were going well. And yes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she knew that she should be appreciative for her health and a roof over her head, but frankly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she was disgusted. When would it be her turn?

It was just so humiliating when others pitied her. She didn’t think she owed any explanations but somehow she ended up answering their questions anyway, blabbing on defensively,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and volunteering way more than she felt comfortable sharing: Mitch had gone on another interview, and no he didn’t get the job. Sara’s divorce proceedings were costing a fortune, etc. Lois kicked herself when she was done, feeling embarrassed and disloyal that she shared her family’s heart-aches.
Lois tried to think of a plausible excuse to beg out of lunch with the other teachers. They were a great group of women and there was a time not long ago when she really looked forward to being with them. But, now it seemed too much to bear.
Lois’s husband Mitch had been out of work for six months now. Her salary didn’t cover their expenses,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so they’ve been tapping precariously into savings. Her daughter Sara was going through a messy divorce and fighting a prescription drug addiction. Lois wasn’t talking to her son after a heated misunderstanding. She came home exhausted every day to a messy house and a depressed husband.
According to Wikipedia, “Self-pity is the psychological state of mind of an individual in perceived adverse situations who has not accepted the situation and does not have the confidence nor the ability to cope with it. It is characterized by a person’s belief that he or she is the victim of events and is therefore deserving of condolence.” The definition goes on to add that “self pity may be considered normal, and in certain circumstances healthy, so long as it is transitory and leads to either acceptance or a determination to change the situation.”
And indeed, Lois may need to give herself some room to feel the depth of her frustrations and disappointments. The effort of smiling and showing interest in her friends’ seemingly better circumstances may tap strongly into Lois’s inner reserves of resilience. She therefore needs to clarify the steps she can take to be self-protective in stressful times, but hopefully to do so without alienating her friends.
Would she feel better taking a break from the lunch meetings? That certainly is one option. On some days she may choose to run errands or go to a quiet place to read a book. Or she may choose to sit in her car quietly to listen to music for a bit, and then join her friends.
Lois can also prepare herself beforehand to reduce the stress of the lunch meetings. She can control her participation in the discussions by reminding herself that if she is put on the spot, she is not obligated to answer any questions or to volunteer embarrassing information. If she prepares an answer ahead of time she might be able to deflect the inquiries (to head off providing details) and give herself a better sense of control. Even firmly saying: “thanks for showing an interest. I’ll keep you updated” may put an end to uncomfortable inquiries. Setting boundaries without being antagonistic may take some finessing.
Life was just so darn hard these days.
Let me go on record to say that I’m a strong believer in positive psychology and the benefits of gratitude,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], positive affirmations and counting your blessings. However, I am well aware that there are times that life is pretty discouraging and a person can’t help but feel self-pity. Sometimes, reaching out to a close friend or confidante, and eventually connecting with others, (even if it feels awkward at first,) may help to increase self-acceptance and offer hope that life can be improved.
Yesterday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Lois lost her patience as Marge droned on about her son’s fabulous job offer. She cringed as Jill gushed on about the travel agent snagging a free upgrade to a suite on her upcoming cruise. These women had been friends for years and Lois genuinely tried to feel happy for them. But she couldn’t listen to another word.
